This class is for the student who wishes to learn(or improve) Gypsy Jazz in the style of Django Reinhardt. Taught by Tracy Kim, who has been teaching and playing this style for over 20 years.
All Instruments are welcome to join in.
Students will learn the most important songs of the Gypsy Jazz repertoire. These songs have been especially selected by Tracy just for the intermediate/advanced players.
The goal is to learn(and improve) Gypsy Jazz Style improvisation and to understand the sounds of Django Reinhardt and the Gypsy Jazz Style! It is a combo of my many classes all in one. Etudes, licks and exercises will often be will use as a warmup. Then, of course, application over a tune(often chosen popular songs for GJ list). Often, Tracy will teach Chord Melody solos too.
This is an improvisation class with the goal to expand your improvisation knowledge, technique, fretboard knowledge and visualization skills and also develop a strong foundation for targeting and embellishing chord tones. Drills, scales, arpeggios, licks, and tricks are all presented in the class. Tabs will be used for guitarists.
Standard notation for all other instruments.
Gypsy Jazz Workshop is designed to allow you to improvise over any chord or chord progression at any time. Tracy Kim has been playing and teaching Gypsy Jazz for about 20 years. He has developed a method using particular exercises and licks that will teach the student how to simplify their thinking and focus on playing lyrical, melodic, and swinging improvisations in the style of Django Reinhardt.
These concepts will be applied immediately to many tunes, including:
Minor Swing, Dark Eyes, Avalon, Sweet Georgia Brown, Djangology, Bossa Dorado, Exactly Like You, After You've Gone, Chinatown, I'll See You in My Dreams, It Don't Mean a Thing, Caravan, and many more contemporary Gypsy Jazz Songs too.
Each session there will feature special Django licks and his unique devices(Whole Tone Scale, Diminshed Arpeggios, Chromaticism, Open String licks).
Tracy will be using etudes created by himself, as well as select licks and ideas from solos from Django, Bireli Lagrene, Stochelo Rosenberg, Romane, Jimmy Rosenberg, Tchavalo Schmitt, Angelo Debarre, Dorado Schmitt, and Others. Lots of great material to practice!
Tracy Kim has hosted the Gypsy Jazz Jam Workshop for over 10 years in the Portland area.
