Artichoke Community Music
ACM is a non-profit organization dedicated to building community by creating an environment that preserves and enriches the acoustic & folk music tradition.
Folk music is defined as the music of the people that has traditionally been passed along through oral history and linked with mainly acoustical instruments. It is the style of music often associated with Americana. The community we serve represents a broad spectrum of the metropolitan Portland/Vancouver population.
Our goal is to create an environment for learning and enjoying folk music by making it accessible to everyone. ACM teaches and celebrates music and cultural expressions rooted in the traditions of diverse American and global communities. Our goals include expanding our music and education programs for school-aged children, seniors and other under-served communities. In order to preserve and celebrate the folk music tradition, we also must support new aspiring musicians and introduce the community to professional musicians who make their living through music. In this way, we also support musicians who struggle to keep this art alive.
ACM is built on the excellent reputation of Artichoke Music, a for-profit venture that began in Portland over 50 years ago. In September 2006, Artichoke Music made the transition to a non-profit center called Artichoke Community Music (ACM), with the objective of providing a wider variety of opportunities, venues, programs and outreach to the metropolitan area community. ACM is now a 501(3)(c) non-profit organization.
ACM is a venue, a school, and an instrument store that builds community. We provide a space for teachers, and assistance connecting them to students; a venue for musicians that helps them build their listening audience; a wide range of concerts and events that are not otherwise available to the community; an opportunity for people to be introduced to all genres of music; and opportunities for self-expression through music and art by bringing people together to sing and play music and build community
